Oshkosh 2004
I moved to Champaign Illinois in July of 2002 to join my soon-to-be
wife where she was in graduate school. At the time, I didn't know
what
AirVenture Oshkosh
was; I'd never heard of it. My flying bug, in remission for
over 10 years, re-surfaced in early 2003 as the result of buying
"The Student Pilot's Flight Manual" with a book store gift
certificate I got for my birthday. I started thinking that a pilot's
license would be a swell way to be able to travel to visit my parents,
who live 8 to 10 hours drive away from here. Drivable, but too long
to visit for the weekend.
I went to part of the SAA fly-in 2003, and there saw an airplane that
I later realized was a
Dragonfly, a tandem-wing
composite amateur-built aircraft. Along with the idea of getting a
pilot's license, I got into the idea of building my own airplane and
flying it. I didn't quite have the bug enough to go to Oskosh in
2003, but I was aware that it was going on.
2004 provided the perfect opportunity to go to Oshkosh for the first
time. My wife studied in England for most of the summer, and we
decided that it would be cool for me to fly over to visit her after
her stay was done so that we could be tourists for a couple of weeks.
I worked out nicely for me to go to Oshkosh for a few days and then
drive down to O'Hare and fly to London, then we few back together.
The following pages containing photos I took at Oshkosh
in 2004. Be sure to also visit my
Starship page
which talks about my
first encounter with one of those legendary aircraft. I bought a Sony
Cybershot DSC-P93 digital camera for this trip, and took oodles and
oodles of photos. Many of them didn't turn out because a 3X optical
zoom is not enough to make intelligible photos out of aircraft that
are far away in the sky; I ended up taking a lot of photos of sky
with small specks.
